Nearer to Thee

When we have union with Christ, our greatest desire will be to come nearer and nearer to Him … to follow His example closely, to know His will for us. That thought reminds me of the hymn, Nearer My God to Thee. It was written by Sarah Flower Adams in 1841. Sarah was an actress who also wrote hymns and poems. Her pastor asked her to write a hymn to go along with a sermon he was planning, based on Genesis 28:11-19. This is the portion of Scripture that refers to Jacob’s dream about the ladder ascending to heaven. She wrote the words in one week, and his sister set it to music. It’s also known as the last song played by the band as the Titanic went down, although there is some dispute about that.

Listen and think about your own commitment to grow into a closer relationship with Jesus.
