If you enjoy true crime, you may enjoy this book which also gives some insight into the Mormonism. Subtitled “a true story of money, murder, and deceit”, it examines the 1985 murder of two people in Utah which led to the exposure and conviction of Mark Hofmann, a document dealer. Hofmann had been forging and selling historical documents and letters for years. He was highly successful and well regarded. Many of the forgeries related to the history of the Mormon Church, and some were purchased by influential Mormons trying to suppress information that would reflect badly on their founder, Joseph Smith. When financial pressure threatened his business, Hofmann resorted to murder in an attempt to avoid detection.
You’ll learn something about the hierarchy of the Mormon Church, the widespread influence of the church in Utah, Mormon beliefs and history. While history and archaeology have often confirmed information in the Bible, Mormon authorities seek to minimize and discourage historical inquiry among members.
