Looking for some enjoyable and edifying reading? Here are a few book recommendations from a member of our “Read It and Reap” reading group:
A Year in the New Testament: Meditations for Each Day of the Church Year (multiple authors, Concordia Publishing House)
This is a new devotional I decided to try this year. I like it so far, and I don’t like most devotionals! If you use CPH’s Treasury of Daily Prayer there is some overlap; the New Testament readings are the same, but the meditation/commentary is different. I actually like the overlap – I can read Treasury of Daily Prayer in the morning, then read a different commentary in the evening on the same NT verses.
Working for Our Neighbor: A Lutheran Primer on Vocation, Economics, and Ordinary Life (Gene Veith)
I chose this topic since I am at the end of my career, and I wanted to read one of Gene Veith’s books. Great explanation of Luther’s doctrine of vocation, and it also includes discussion questions and a good bibliography. It would be a great study for a young person starting out.
The Great Divorce (C.S. Lewis)
This is an old book from my library I wanted to read again. It’s a quick, not-too-heavy read, full of imagery regarding the nature of good/evil and heaven/hell. We meet a lot of interesting characters in this tale, and I think any reader will see something of themselves in at least one character (and won’t like what they see). His conversation with George MacDonald is lovely.
Check one of these out and enjoy!
